Scientific Drilling Infrastructure

Prof. Leif Bjelm and Dr. Jan‐Erik Rosberg from the Department of Engineering Geology at Lund University have recently completed the public tender for procurement of a Swedish scientific drilling infrastructure. A contract has been signed with Atlas Copco for the delivery of a Christensen surface core drilling rig, model CT20. The CT20 is a new design complying with the latest safety and environmental regulations and it has a technical capacity for diamond core drilling down to 2500 m in NQ‐size. A major part of the in‐hole equipment will be delivered by Boart Longyear.

Workshop on Hydrogeological Aspects of Deep Drilling

A workshop about the hydrological aspects of Deep Drilling will be held at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden from 20th to 22nd September 2011. Please visit the announcement on the website of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) (link).

Application for drillrig to the Swedish Research Council successful

Examples of mobile drill rigsIn April 2009, the SDDP working group under the lead of Prof. Leif Bjelm from the Department of Engineering Geology at Lund University applied for a research infrastructure grant to Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet - VR). This infrastructure, a mobile truck-mounted drillrig that can reach depth of 2500 m and more, has been granted recently to the delight of the Swedish scientific drilling community. The amount of the grant is confidential as the purchase will take place under open competition. More information about SDDP and the envisaged infrastructure is available in the SDDP Science & Technology Plan. You may also download a: PDF-file of the application to the Swedish Research Council (all sensitive information removed).

SDDP projects have also been successful in this year's call for project funding by VR. The projects "Caledonian Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides" and "Concentric impact structures in the Palaeozoic" were awarded funds for site investigations. The work is anticipated to start during 2010.
