SDDP in Geology Today
Recently, an article about the Swedish Deep Drilling Program was published in Geology Today, a journal that features topics of current interest in Earth Sciences for the Earth Sciences community and the general reader.
You find the paper at the journals website (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118533000/home). If you do no have access to the journal via your library or a subscription you can ask for a copy by filling in this contact form.

Application for drillrig to the Swedish Research Council successful
In April 2009, the SDDP working group under the lead of Prof. Leif Bjelm from the Department of Engineering Geology at Lund University applied for a research infrastructure grant to Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet - VR). This infrastructure, a mobile truck-mounted drillrig that can reach depth of 2500 m and more, has been granted recently to the delight of the Swedish scientific drilling community. The amount of the grant is confidential as the purchase will take place under open competition. More information about SDDP and the envisaged infrastructure is available in the SDDP Science & Technology Plan. You may also download a: PDF-file of the application to the Swedish Research Council (all sensitive information removed).
SDDP projects have also been successful in this year's call for project funding by VR. The projects "Caledonian Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides" and "Concentric impact structures in the Palaeozoic" were awarded funds for site investigations. The work is anticipated to start during 2010.

New NordForsk researchers network in scientific drilling
Nordforsk funds a new researchers network "Scientific Drilling in the Nordic Countries" during the period 2010 - 2012. Competence and experience exchange and education in topics related to scientific drilling are on the agenda of the network. More information is available at the researchers network's homepage at http://www.geofys.uu.se/sdnc. The network is coordinated by the SDDP office, located at Uppsala University, Sweden. Participating groups are from the Nordic countries.

ICDP workshop proposals approved
Two SDDP projects got their ICDP workshop proposals approved this year. This implies that the workshop proposals were judged to be of high quality and the science of global significance. The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) will now support workshops for these SDDP projects with the aim to establish a comprehensive international working group and elaborate and decide on the scientific programme. The two approved projects are:
Collisional Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides (COSC). The workshop, with a short excursion for the invited scientists, is planned for early summer 2010 in a place nearby the planned drillsites.
Postglacial Fault Drilling Project (PFDP). The workshop will be organized in 2010.

ICDP-SDDP Scientific Drilling - Training Course

The ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) sponsored Scientific Drilling - Training Course from 10th - 15th May 2009 at Skokloster, Sweden, brought together 7 lecturers and 28 participants from SDDP and associated research projects. Topics addressed during the course include project planning and management, drilling technology and methodology, on-site geology, logging and in-hole experiments, and data and sample handling. Particular attention was paid to two of the advanced SDDP projects that had submitted workshop proposals to ICDP this year, COSC and DRL. After a successful and intense week with plenty of experience exchange and scientific and social network building, the SDDP working group is back at the projects both stronger and with a broader knowledge and experience.
